Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel ( February 16, 1834 – August 9, 1919) was a versatile German scholar, known for his contributions in various fields. He was a zoologist, naturalist, eugenicist, philosopher, physician, professor, marine biologist, and artist. Haeckel's remarkable achievements include the discovery, description, and naming of numerous new species, the creation of a comprehensive genealogical tree connecting all forms of life, and the coining of various significant biological terms, such as ecology, phylum, phylogeny, and Protista.

Haeckel's artistic contributions are equally notable. He produced a collection of more than 100 intricate, multi-colored illustrations of plants, trees, animals and sea creatures, compiled in his work "Kunstformen der Natur" ("Art Forms of Nature"). This book later influenced the Art Nouveau artistic movement.
